GIRL TALK NO 28

you should know
I’m not talking
about him
anymore
I insisted
she kissed me and
laughed
and you should know
I’m onto
your bullshit
tell me
all about him
every dirty detail

April is National Poetry Month and even though I’m woefully behind on my goal to post a poem each day, I’m still enjoying myself. This exercise in my love of words began last year, inspired by the wondrous Jason Reynolds and my writing promptress Jena Schwartz. It was fun and full of magic and makes me so excited to see what pieces 2017 produces. They won’t be perfect, they never are, but they’ll be here, every day of April. I hope you stop by and enjoy the words and maybe even feel moved to share some of your own.

OBSTREPEROUS ME

all I
managed
today
was to
color
outside
the lines

OMNISCIENT

if I step outside
myself
and narrate us
like some third person
omniscient
with commentary
and critique
our lives laid bare
for digestion
and analysis
I know how
it will go down:
I will cock my head to the side
my eyes see every detail
my ears hear each sigh
my soul feels all
and I will smile
because wrapped around
each other
together
forever
we are simple
and undeniable
we are wondrous
we
are
love

LAMENT

I miss

having a President
who knew better than
to congratulate a soldier
on being awarded
the Purple Heart
when a simple sincere
thank you
is deserved

intelligence and the celebration
of all things thoughtful

knowing bears in hibernation
were safe
in their
deep sleep

the Oval Office
being occupied
by a man
who knew the worth
of a woman
and celebrated and upheld
our bodies our rights
every day of his tenure

racists keeping their hate
on the down low
life is tough enough
without that noise
in my face
every damn day

full sentences and paragraphs
of wondrous words
and speeches of beauty and rhythm
and grace

44
and what 45
could have been

Be the Magic

do it
do all of the things
that bring you joy
ask all of the questions
that make you scared
love all of the people
who need some of you
wrapped around them
scream
laugh
dance
cry
live

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

this change of address
is like a welcome
shedding of skin
as I peel back
years upon years
of otherness
to find me
deep under all that shit
waiting with a sly grin
a dirty joke
and the one
question that matters:
what took you
so long, sweetheart?

UNMAPPED TERRITORY

do not study me
as some guide
to your womanhood
I’m no map
to be reviewed and
understood
there is nothing
logical about these
hollows and curves
this intellect
my heart
I am a ludicrous
amalgam of
magic and vulnerability
laughter and sex
do not attempt
to emulate
any of this
fuckery
it is unique and bold
and goddamned beautiful
and it is mine
make your own
