#WednesdayFreeWrite – WONDERFUL YOU

tumblr_navlmoxrf01sipckzo1_500

WONDERFUL YOU

I think you’re wonderful

like peanut butter out of the jar
late at night when nothing else will do

like quiet mornings
that smell of coffee and sex

like old Levis
soft and supple
with frayed ends and thin knees

like head-tossed-back
feel-it-in-your-belly laughter

like Miles Davis and unfinished crossword puzzles
on a rainy Sunday afternoon

like the first green of spring
pushed through the snow

like words and rhythm and love
together in that perfect uh-huh

like the still of the sea
before it crashes the beach

like the magic of a bhangra beat
that gives the hips a
life of their own

like a deep cleansing breath
in the middle of the forest

like a warm kiss on the throat
that heats the blood and
goosebumps the skin

like tulips picked from the street market bin
on a random walk home
just because

like boxes of Paper Mate flair tip pens
ready to write the next great love story

like you
like me
like us

I think you’re wonderful
wonderful you

My #WednesdayFreeWrite series is based on what I write during the 10 minutes allotted my writing group’s Wednesday Prompt. As always, these pieces are works of fiction, erupting from my incredibly over-active imagination. They are unedited and unscripted, super loose and probably my favorite ten minutes of the week. They are perfect in their imperfections and I hope you enjoy.

#WednesdayFreeWrite – CARE PACKAGE

img_7116

CARE PACKAGE

a package arrived in the mail today
perfectly wrapped in polka dot paper
and tied with pretty string

and I knew it was from you
because you know I love all things dotted
and boxes tied with pretty string
remind me life is full of surprise and wonder

and inside
nestled on a soft pillow of silvery tissue
rested my cold dark heart
returned intact
albeit barely beating
horribly bruised
battered and scarred

with a note attached
in your precise script:
RETURN TO SENDER

and perhaps another girl
would cry and rant and lose herself
in the loss of you

but I’ve told you a million times
I’m not like other girls

so thank you
for the care package

I want my heart
I rather like it
and believe one day
someone else will too

I appreciate the time you took
wrapping it just so
it’s back in my chest now
learning to beat anew

Getting Proustian With…MEREDITH WILD – The Interview Series

You know those times everything falls into place perfectly, making you feel as if the gods might be watching over you, that they’re busy ensuring you walk into that bodega a few doors in from the corner of 14th street and 8th avenue, at exactly two forty-seven in the afternoon, after the lunch rush but before folks start heading home from work, to grab a water and some mints before your late afternoon drinks date, and even though you never play the lottery, for some reason that afternoon, you decide to throw luck to the wind and give it a shot, and even though you have favorite numbers – 3, 25, 4, 45, and 33 – you tell the clerk, “I’ll take the quick pick,” so he punches something into that lottery machine and out pop your tickets, you shove them into your bag, thank him for the water and mints, and head to The Standard, drink some whiskey, laugh a lot, kiss a sexy guy before heading home, and by then you’ve forgotten all about those tickets in your bag only to be up late in bed, legs stretched out, laptop open, writing a scorching love scene when the nightly news ends and that lady comes on – Yolandaaaaaa Vega! – to announce the day’s winning numbers, and you laugh because you suddenly remember how silly you were buying those lottery tickets but grab them out of your bag anyway to see if even one of them matches up, and HOLY FUCK, they all match up, and just like that, you’re a millionaire?

That’s how I feel about Meredith Wild.

She’s my lottery ticket. Because I don’t know how all of the pieces fell into place to bring us together and for her to like me and me to like her and her to share advice and words and editors and agents, but holy smokes it happened and damned if I’m going to over-analyze it. Nah. No way. I over-analyze enough shit, I’m just going to let the thing between Meredith and me be a case of dumb, stupid luck and enjoy it for all it’s worth, because so far, it’s worth more than I can ever repay.

But I say that all the time about Meredith.

What I have never ever said before is that I managed to get her to sit still long enough to subject her to one of my favorite questionnaires.

Yup. You read that right. Meredith got a little Proustian with me.

Because of course, after everything else she’s already done for me, she also needs to let me interview her.

Duh.

Check out the queen of erotic romance, giving us a little insight into what makes her tick…

#WednesdayFreeWrite – WHAT IF

3916778790761b9412e631e6056fbbe8 (1)

WHAT IF

what if
you were the kind of man
who took one look at me
and knew
right then and there
I had to be yours

what if
I was the kind of woman
who invited you into my bed
that first night
and then demanded
all of you
for myself

what if
your were the kind of man
who listened to my breath
as I slept next to you
and understood
you needed that soft sweetness
played on repeat
the remainder of your days

what if
I was the kind of woman
who watched you
move around my kitchen
interact with my friends
become part of my life
and served you an ultimatum
right then and there
me or her

what if
you were the kind of man
who touched my skin
held my hand
kissed my mouth
pulled me close
and never ever ever
let me go

what if
I was the kind of woman
who didn’t fall for
pretty words
falling from the lips
of a beautiful soul
and instead rolled my eyes
and told you to
keep it moving

what if
you were the kind of man
who decided I matter
more than most anyone else
who couldn’t bear
my sadness or tears
who loved me desperately
and would go to great lengths
to prove it

what if
I was the kind of woman
who didn’t love hard and fierce
and true
who kept you at a distance
made you feel second-best
who didn’t make time for you
no matter what

what if
you were the kind of man
who knew more than anything
you wanted me
wrapped around you
forever
and made that happen
before I slipped away

what if
I was the kind of woman
who listened to her gut
and the soul-crushing
message it whispered
into her darkest parts
and stopped answering
your emails and texts
leaving you awash
in silence

what if
you were the kind of man
full of action and will
who burned with a desire
to own me
mind body soul
regardless of others
who needed to wake every morning
lying next to me
and then made that conviction
reality

what if
I was the kind of woman
who never let you in
kept you on the periphery
relegated you to lesser importance
never quite first
always second-best

if you were that man
I would fall for you
a hundred lifetimes over

I would never
be that woman

If you were that man
actions would speak
louder than words

I would never
be that woman

If you were that man
I would already be yours

I am
not that woman

Are you that man?

#WednesdayFreeWrite – NIGHTTIME

Unknown

NIGHTTIME

when you lie awake in the deep of night
do you remember
the curve of my hip
as you dragged your fingers
along my skin

when you lie awake in the deep of night
does the timbre of my voice
the soft consonants and
drawn out vowels
curve around your fantasies

when you lie awake in the deep of night
can you feel my breath
whispered along your skin
as you recall
my mouth pressed to your throat

when you lie awake in the deep of night
are you stilled by thoughts
of the sweat of our bodies
as we wrapped around
each other
sexed up and satisfied

when you lie awake in the deep of night
does my absence
haunt the dark spaces of your soul
those places only I know exist
those places only I inhabit

when you lie awake in the deep of night
do you wish me by your side
eternally
my laughter in your ears
my sighs belonging to you

when you lie awake at night
do you promise yourself
to come for me soon
find me love me
hold me close
for all of our forever evers

when you lie awake at night
do you think of me
my smile my eyes my lips my skin
because all I do
every moment every second
of every day
is think of you
